  • 1928 - Brigitte Mölbling (M)
  • What I found most pleasing about this novel is that there is a hint Bernie may catch a break. He may aid the new state of Israel? A Nazi Hunter?
  • I am sure there will be a woman involved. One last act of chivalry, however futile. Dying--to make a difference, redemption.
  • I have never felt BGs interaction with the upper echelons of Nazi Germany to be improbable. They needed his assistance, someone competent and reliable. Get that rep and you will be summoned forth.
  • Terrible news. An outstanding author. I looked forward to each new Gunther novel with great anticipation. My sympathies to the family.
  • "You’ll understand that mine is not the kind of business where I can show you the testimonials of several satisfied customers." "The Pale Criminal"
  • "I had discovered myself to be as temperamentally unsuited to partnership as I would have been to the presidency of the Deutsche Bank." "The Pale Criminal"
  • She gave me a judicious sort of look. "You know, for a police Kommissar you are certainly full of surprises." Frau Kalau vom Hofe (An attractive forensic psychiatrist). "The Pale Criminal"
  • “Sure,” I said. “Make it a large one.” “Is there any other kind for men like us?” In response to an offer of a cognac, by Harold Hennig (not a nice man). “The Other Side of Silence.”
  • On women. “They’re odd creatures who don’t know what they want right up until the moment they decide on exactly what they do want, and when you don’t give it to them right away, they’re apt to get sore with you. ” Excerpt From: Philip Kerr. “The O…
  • “All my experience as a policeman told me not to trust her. Then again, my recent experience as a German told me not to trust anyone.” “If the Dead Rise Not"
  • "The only thing I know about young women in Havana is that most of them are more efficient Marxists than you and your friends. They know more about the redistribution of wealth than anyone I’ve ever met. ” “If the Dead Rise Not”
  • I would go with "The Lady from Zagreb" lady, Dalia. A movie star, and upstaging Goebells is hard to beat.

  • Sad to say, Chandler had many personal problems, and alcoholism. This would have hampered his productivity.
  • I have not read any of PK's SF. Should at least take a look.
  • The latest version: Biography of Burnhard Gunther MV: March Violets [1989 / ] tPC: The Pale Criminal [1990 / aGR: A German Requiem [1991 / ] TOftO: The One from the Other [2006 / ] aQF: A Quiet Flame [2008 / ] ItDRN: If the Dead Rise Not [2…
  • prequel idea: A murder in the trenches of ww1. Wait, not as silly as it may sound. Spies, counter agents, corruption, informers, lies and deceit. Mix it all together. It would explain his later distrust of authority and cynicism.
  • I don't want to see Gunther die in a hospital, gasping out his last moments. Rather, to die gallantly, serving one last good purpose. Something that makes up for his past failures, something that gives him a few last moments of redemption. Daring, d…
  • Maybe it is a death wish, maybe father issues, maybe four years of "The Great War", watching your comrades die at the hands of incompetent and careless generals.? Heydrich, maybe helping the freedom fighters assassinate H would have been the way to…
  • I would not hold one's breath. There are always lots of good ideas and scripts floating around, but most don't even get a chance. Also, I am inclined to say, an anti-establishment, noir detective is not in the public mood at the moment.
  • I would go with Humphrey Bogart, but...
  • I don't see it happening in this novel, but it would be fun to see Bernie meet again his daughter, and assume a parental role. How would he handle it? Have to put aside some of his cynicism (hard earned), and evoke his hidden empathy.
  • Glad you like. Will put more work into it.
