Have just finished my final Gunther novel (Berlin Noir). In terms of Bernie's chronological life I've pretty much read them in reverse order as I was introduced to the books when a friend lent me Field Gray.

I sometimes find myself speculating on Bernie's final days. I see him back in Berlin, living modestly on limited means. The cigarettes, booze and conditions he's endured preclude a long life, perhaps he just about makes it to 1970. Despite his liberal leanings he was still born in the Victorian era and I doubt he has any love for the concrete buildings going up around him. The counter culture? Part of him should celebrate it's arrival but I'm not sure sure he would. I'm afraid I see his well worn cynicism developing into bitterness.

A melancholy view of the end of his life, apologies if this runs counter to anything stated in the novels, it's been a while since I read Field Gray

Maybe the whole "Nazi Germany" thing has film producers leery but still...

I wonder if Johnny Depp would work? Not that he isn't great in everything he plays, but he might be too glamorous for Bernie. Maybe Richard Kind, the friend in "Mad About You" and now plays in Leverage.

Help. I read a book last year set in wartime Germany about a civilian policeman who was teamed up with a Gestapo or SS (ex-Judge) to solve a series of murders involving the Jewish community , who were being rounded up and shipped out of Berlin(?). The novel ended in an abandoned slaughter house where bodies had been fed to pigs and where a guy taught young street kids martial arts. It was a much better read than it sounds from the above! I wanted to give it to a friend who loves the Bernie Gunther books but couldn't recognise the book from my vague description.
Can anyone help? Please? Thanks a lot.

Thoughts, anyone?

I don't know if this will post or not as I have written comments on this web site that have not appeared. Yesterday I started "A Quiet Flame" on Audible.com. For those of you are listening readers, perhaps you will understand my frustration at listening to the first 4 Bernie Gunther novels read by a world class narrator, John Lee, and then attempting to listen to Paul Hecht start the fifth installment. He reads 4 in a row before John Lee comes back for the last 2. I've listened to Hecht before and remember having had this issue.
I can not figure a reason why Mr. Kerr would switch for 4 and then go back to the original narrator. Whatever the reason, I'm going to have to skip the next 4 books so that the "real Bernie Gunther" has his voice again. I would read these 4 in print, but my life will not permit me the luxury or the patience.
Another one of my favorite authors had to switch narration after over a dozen of the "installments", but it was only because Ralph Cosham died suddenly. The author researched a while before choosing an appropriate replacement. Paul Hecht is NOT Bernie!!

I actually knew Meyer Lansky. The first time we met was by chance. I was serving in the Israel Army on a weekend leave in Tel-Aviv. Meyer, as he usually did each morning was out walking his dog along the beach-front. At this time I had no idea who he was. I was sitting on the low brick wall facing the old opera house and round pool opposite the beach and he joined me . From then on we'd get together, drink coffee and chat most weekends. I liked the poor guy; felt sorry for him and we became good friends. When first he told me his name I was surprised but didn't show it. As a young kid in Australia I'd read about Meyer in the book Murder Incorporated which my father had bought. Later, in trust over many things we became very close.
I've never read any books before by Philip Kerr but presently I'm into reading "The Lady from Zagreb" It's great - right down my alley. I write too.

As most readers will agree, part of the fun of reading a series is spotting continuity errors from one book to the next. And with historical fiction there's also the fun of spotting the occasional factual error. Maybe fans of mystery fiction are predisposed to enjoy this aspect as it invites them play detective themselves. We know we think it enhances the enjoyment of reading series fiction.

Help us create a detailed list of bloopers in the Bernie books -- both continuity errors and historical errors. We don't think there are very many, but there are a few, some of which have already been pointed out in this forum.

Dinah attending "Brown University"
the change in Bernie's age

And we'll add: the mention of Luna Park in The Pale Criminal (according to Wikipedia Luna Park closed in 1933) and the discrepancy in the date of Bernie's first wife's death.

We think there's a slight inconsistency is Bernie's WWI troop movements too -- maybe a WWI expert can weigh in on that.

If you come across anything that sounds wrong to you, please post here. Include the books involved and as much detail as possible. If there's a question in your mind about something you read but you don't have time to research it, post it here and someone will look into it.

Eventually we'll post a compilation of Bernie Bloopers with cross references. Happy reading!!

Love these books, and love the Bernie Gunther character. An author can't hope to achieve more than readers developing a bond with a particular character. I think it's a mix of things where the author passes over some kind of threshold and you feel like this guy was actually living and breathing during the early/middle part of the twentieth century. (Hats off to Mr. Kerr) Strangely though, I have always had a hard time picturing or giving Bernie a face. The closest thing that comes to mind is Russell Crowe as Bud White in L.A. Confidential. Like Bernie, Bud is stoic and has a good heart despite the moral backwaters he usually finds himself sailing in. He also figures to be Bernie's height and weight. Anybody else have any opinions (doesn't necessarily need to be an actor)

Cheers

AK

link to a shot of Bud from the movie:

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3863910656/tt0119488
