Germans tuned into US pop culture?

I am ready to begin on my fifth PK book. The references to American and English pop culture seem to jump out at me. In TOFTO there were a number of them. Bernie's thoughts on Maureen O'Sullivan in the Tarzan movies were amusing. Also his ignorance of Agatha Christie (therefore also of Roger Ackroyd). In early postwar Germany how many middleaged Germans were tuned into U.S. and Brit pop culture I wonder.
